Blue (ブルー , Burū) was a dark blue-black colored wolf-dog hybrid. At the start of the series, Blue was shown as Quent Yaiden's pet and aide in hunting down wolves; believing, just like her master, that wolves were to blame for the destruction of her home and the death of her family. She lived her life as a pet dog, unaware of her wolf heritage. However, upon meeting Cheza, her wolf blood awakened and she was henceforth unable to continue hunting down members of her own kind. She chose to join Kiba's pack in the search for Paradise and found companionship and love in Hige.

Naming[]

Blue's name comes from her dark-blue fur and her vivid blue eyes.

Appearance[]

Human-guise[]

As a human, Blue appeared as an olive-skinned woman with unkempt black hair, sharp blue eyes and red lips.

She wore a dark coat lined with silver buttons that extended to her mid thighs, pinched at the waist with a belt, with the collar up. A red scarf was tied loosely around her neck with one end hanging limply over her chest. She wore a pair of thigh-high black boots with low heels.

True form[]

True to her name, Blue was a wolf-dog with dark-blue fur. Her wolf features are rather dominant, but she is leaner than most wolves and, like a husky, has bright blue eyes. She is originally seen with a silver spiked collar.

Personality[]

Like Toboe, Blue was extremely fond of and attached to humans, having lived with them her whole life. She was extremely devoted and obedient to Quent Yaiden and followed his commands without hesitation. Despite this devotion, Blue found her wolf's calling more enticing and true to her nature after a chance meeting with Cheza. In contrast to Quent's rather impulsive and emotionally-driven actions, Blue was calm and level-headed. Though usually appearing laid back, Blue was quick to become fiercely angered and protective if anyone or anything endangered those close to her.

Background[]

Blue's origins are largely unknown like where she came from, who her parents were and what her birth name was is a mystery. The only known is that she was apparently abandoned, but later found by Ruus Yaiden as a pup. She was raised in Kyrios by Ruus and his parents until the town's destruction.

On that day, Blue and Quent Yaiden were fortunate enough to escape the blaze that swallowed Kyrios, but Ruus and Quent's wife were not so lucky. They both perished in the fires. Blue and Quent could only watch in horror as a pack of wolves emerged from the flames, appearing to feast on the burned corpses of the town's inhabitants. Unfortunately, Quent interpreted this sight as proof that wolves were the cause of the tragedy, but it's more likely they were drawn out of hiding by the true perpetrators: Lady Jaguara's soldiers searching for wolves. The truth would not come out until much later when Blue overheard some soldiers in Jaguara's keep talking about the incident. Quent, however, was more resistant to accept the truth, even after Blue revealed herself to him as part-wolf with the ability to disguise herself as a human.

Plot[]

Anime[]

Blue and Quent Yaiden are travelling in the snowy wastelands when they come across an arctic wolf and attempt to kill it. However, Quent only manages to fire a grazing shot at the wolf. Although they lose sight of it, they follow its tracks into nearby Freeze City.

Upon entering the city, Quent wastes no time and heads into a bar to get a drink. While he converses with the bartender about the devilish nature of wolves, Blue is left outside to rest. She's awakened by the sound of breaking items and notices a gang of youths walking past. One of them stops to look at Blue and her intuition and sense of smell sees through his human disguise, identifying him as a large, grey wolf. She barks, getting Quent's attention, but the person is question is gone. The only evidence of a wolf having been present are his pawprints left on the dirty ground. Later that day, Quent and Blue come across the white wolf they'd been tracking and Quent fires at it again once Blue has it distracted. Law enforcement arrives and apprehend both the wolf and Quent for firing a weapon in city limits. Upon questioning, Quent tells the unconvinced authorities, including detective Hubb Lebowski, that the 'dog' he shot was in fact a wolf and that it's not dead yet. His words fall on deaf ears since there have been no wolf sightings in over 200 years.

Quent and Blue then go to a hotel to rest for the night. The following day, imbibing in another drink, Quent tells Blue that they can't afford to make more mistakes and let their quarry escape; they need to be more wary. As they walk through an alley, Quent swaying from drink, they spot Tsume, the grey wolf from the previous day, and Toboe whom Quent quickly realizes is a young red wolf. Before Quent can fire a shot at Toboe, Tsume knocks his gun loose, scratching his hand, and the two wolves escape to the rooftops.

Later that afternoon, Hubb visits Quent in a bar and asks his advice on the situation with the wolves, having taken a more serious interest in the matter. Quent informs him that, while wolves are rare, they've developed a survival technique where they disguise themselves as human. This tidbit, and the fact that Quent's been drinking, discourage Hubb. Before he leaves, Quent tells Hubb to keep an eye out since 'anyone could be a wolf', quoting from the Book of the Moon which refers to wolves as being the precursors to humans and a Paradise that awaits them. As Hubb exits the bar, he passes a recently escaped Kiba and Hige and sneezes suddenly, hinting at their true forms as wolves.

Quent and Blue continue their search through the city and come upon a conversation between a little girl and her father where she recounts seeing a dog who looked like a boy. Quent decides to follow them on the lead, but Blue picks up the scent of the grey wolf from before and heads off in another direction. She finds Tsume running from police and intercepts him. He makes a snide compliment regarding her tracking skills and tries to escape, but she clamps down on his arm. They fall onto a pile of boxes full of potatoes and, while Tsume gets away, Blue is injured. Quent finds her with grey fur mixed in with her own and notices a blood trail leading away. He brings her to the hotel to rest while he goes out in search of the wolf, but the search turns up nothing. He figures that the wolves have left the city and, after Blue recovers, decides they should follow. First, he heads back to the bar for a drink where Hubb finds him once more, this time carrying a copy of Book of the Moon which was given to him by Cher Degré, his ex-wife and scientist at Freeze City's bio-chemical research center. Hubb questions Quent on the truth in the stories and tells him Cher has gone missing. Quent simply gives his own thoughts on the idea of the end of the world approaching, where the moon will turn red and burn. Quent tells Hubb to do whatever matters to him soon before anything happens, including finding his ex-wife if he really cares about her. In the meantime, Quent and Blue continue their hunt.

They hitch a bus ride to a town on the cliffs where Quent typically heads straight into a bar to get a drink. There, he finds Cher along with Lord Orkham's troops. Outside, Blue is awakened from her rest by the presence of four wolves (Tsume, Kiba, Hige and Toboe) and Cheza, the Flower Maiden. Although Blue growls at the sight of the wolves, Cheza approaches her without fear and Blue grows silent. Cheza senses the wolf's blood within Blue, a revelation that shocks Blue but awakens a calling in her. When Cheza and the wolves run off, Blue attempts to follow, but she is held back by her leash.

In the morning, a tired Quent looks at a picture of his family, reminding Blue about how Ruus found her and brought her home, and mentions how Ruus inherited his stubbornness. Quent points out how big Blue has grown and pets her before drifting off to sleep. After Quent falls asleep, Blue's leash falls from his hand. She hears a yell and goes to investigate. She finds some of Lord Orkham's troops trying to capture a young boy. One of them throws the boy into a wall, knocking him unconscious and bleeding. Blue growls in the boy's defense and knocks a gun out of a soldier's hand when he tries to shoot her. Frightened, the other soldiers flee. Blue checks on the boy and begins to lick his head. When Quent arrives, he sees her standing over the bleeding boy and immediately experiences flashbacks to Ruus' death and the destruction of his hometown. He aims his gun at Blue, believing irrationally that she is responsible for the boy's injury, and tells her to back away. She abides, whining, as Quent checks on the boy and treats his injury. Quent returns the boy to his home and bandages his head while Blue waits outside, tied up. Two soldiers from before walk by and recognize Blue. The one whom Blue attacked, confident since she's now tied up, beats Blue in the head with the butt of his gun in revenge. Blue takes the brutal hits until her leash becomes undone, at which point she attacks the soldier. He shoots her, breaking her collar, but she manages to kill him. Quent comes outside following the ruckus but only finds the bloodied corpse of the soldier and Blue's collar, Blue herself nowhere in sight.

He locates her later while chasing after the wolves. She's badly injured and bleeding. Quent kneels at her side when she collapses but, upon hearing wolves howl in the distance, leaves her to continue the chase. Blue tugs at his coat, but he promises to come back. When he eventually does, Blue is gone. Since her awakening, Blue is afraid that Quent will not want to keep her if he finds out she's part wolf and, dismayed at Quent's abandonment, brief though it was, she begins a journey of her own. She has no destination in mind, but she learns to harness the ability to disguise herself as a human. Eventually, she encounters a group of humans in a black market. When she inquires about work, she finds they likely want her organs. She runs off, with the men chasing after her, and dashes into a building where Kiba's pack is hiding. Together, the wolves fight and scare away the humans. Hige invites her to join them on their search for Paradise, but she declines the offer.

Blue next meets Quent in Lady Jaguara's city while she is in human form. After finding him unconscious on the cold ground, she bundles him up and moves him somewhere safe. When he comes to, she makes light conversation and subtly reveals the truth she overheard from some soldiers; the ruin of Kyrios was not caused by wolves, but by Jaguara's soldiers looking for wolves hiding out in the area. Quent angrily rejects the information, but Blue becomes emotional and desperate, calling him 'Pops'. At that moment, he recognizes her, seeing her again in her dog form, and tearfully embraces her. Despite this heartfelt reunion, Blue announces she is no longer his dog.

OVA[]

Although Blue and Quent Yaiden are once again reunited out in the wastelands, Quent is hesitant to allow her to stay by his side. He wanders off on his own, followed by Toboe, but they both fall at the hands of Lord Darcia III - Toboe being accidentally shot by Quent. As they both lie dying, Quent allows Toboe to rest on his arm, petting him gingerly. Blue finds them together and Quent is able to acknowledge her as his dog before his dying breath. After Darcia turns into a wolf, he takes credit for Quent's death, leading an angered Blue to charge at him. However, Darcia's strength is too much and he crushes her back before biting her neck. An injured Hige attempts to avenge her by biting Darcia's leg, but this only enrages the Lord-wolf. Darcia viciously slashes Hige's neck, leaving the two wolves to lie with each other in their last moments. Hige promises not to leave Blue and he gently rubs her head before Tsume arrives and, at Hige's request, puts him out of his misery.

Relationships[]

Quent Yaiden[]

Blue considered Quent and his family, particularly Ruus, to be her own and looked to Quent as a father-figure during the time she lived with him. Although he considered her his pet dog, there was a great deal of loyalty and trust between them. She cared for him greatly and carried a strong desire to please and protect him. When she discovers her wolf heritage, a strain is placed on their relationship as she tries to find her place in the world; she could not in good conscience continue to hunt her own kind. Her love for Quent ran so deeply that she was willing to risk exposing her identity to him, telling him truths that may have been too painful to bear; namely showing him her wolf heritage and telling him about Kyrios and her later desire to follow the wolves to paradise. Quent's final moment, when he calls her 'his dog', was a moment of closure for her, sealing any strains that may still have existed in their relationship.

Hige[]

Blue and Hige formed an obvious romantic bond; the only two wolves to do so. Initially, after meeting him, she is put off by Hige's lackadaisical behavior, but they quickly grow close. Despite the possibility that Paradise won't accept Blue because she is half-wolf, she promises to follow Hige, no matter what happens, saying that if she can be with him at the end, it'll be enough. They die in each other's arms after their fight with Lord Darcia III.

Quotes[]

  • "You're nice. Gross, but nice."
  • "No, Hige, don’t leave me behind!"
  • "If I can be with you when the world ends, it’ll be enough for me!"

Trivia[]

  • There are differences in Blue's role in the manga compared to the anime. In the manga:
  • Blue is the only hybrid in the series.
  • Before joining Kiba's pack, Blue attacked three of the four wolf protagonists:
    • Kiba (once)
    • Tsume (once in the anime; twice in the manga)
    • Toboe (once)
  • Blue is known to have made several kills during the series. Her victims included one or more of Lord Orkham's soldiers —in self-defense.
  • Blue is the only member of Kiba's pack to form a romantic relationship (with Hige and only in the anime).
  • Blue admitted to trusting Toboe more to protect Quent Yaiden if she wasn't there to do so because, like her, he was raised with humans and loved them.
  • Blue is the only female in Kiba's pack.
  • Blue is one of two wolves in the series to have an eye color —blue— that is different from the common golden-yellow; the second being Lord Darcia III.
  • Blue is the second of the wolf protagonists to die.[1]
  • Blue is one of the few female wolves seen in the anime, alongside Cole and the old she-wolf captured by Lady Jaguara's soldiers.
  • Before the tragedy of Quent Yaiden's family, Blue is seen wearing a red collar, this may be why she appears wearing a red scarf instead of a spiked collar like Hige.
